The Community Whisperer
- What You Need to Know & Do to help someone feel safe.

Thank you for coming on board as a Community Whisperer - the difference you make, makes a difference!

Here is an easy one-hour online training to get you and your fellow Community Whisperers versed in suicide prevention skills (click here to start the training)

Once you have completed the Blackdog Institute's Recognise and Respond course, download and print a copy of the following poster and documents, so you have them ready in case a BRAVE & TRICKY conversation around suicide is needed.

Please ensure you have a copy of:

1) Poster for How To Assist Someone in Distress.
2) The GLASS EMPTY brochure - a supportive guide for suicide prevention.
3) Whisperers ringing 000.
4) Good samaritan document.
5) How Am I Check-In Document.
6) Group Sharing Protocols.

These steps are important for recognising when someone is in a state of suicide distress. Keeping these documents in an easy to access folder allows staff to respond to someone in distress quickly and effectively.

Step 1
Download, print and read the following poster. Then place it in an easy to find folder for quick access.

Step 2
Download this Supportive Guide for Suicide Prevention, print and read it. It is designed to be double-sided to be printed on the short-edge option. This guide is to be given to someone in distress when they have deployed the GLASS EMPTY Signal and asked for help, or when they have discreetly handed over a GLASS EMPTY coaster to staff for a check-in.

This gives you some time between recognising when someone is in distress and when you are able to start a conversation to either get them feeling safe again (if you have the time to do so) or to find someone in the community who can assist.

Step 3
Read the What to Do When You Ring 000 Guide, and in the next document, check out your responsibilities for providing assistance to a person in suicide distress.

Step 4
Watch the following 70-minute presentation and training video from Jono Hart, The OG Pub Whisperer, to gain extra skills and understand why community suicide prevention is so important and crucially needed right now.

Step 5
Create a resource list of professional support services in your local area. This could include GP's, psychologists and mental health support providers. Distribute it among your local Whisperer Team. (You can use the Aldinga Whisperer Team Resource below as a guide.)
*Note the resources available on the Aldinga Resource document give the person in distress autonomy in how they receive support.

Step 6
Once you have completed the training, watch the presentation and feel confident enough to engage and navigate a BRAVE & TRICKY Conversation around suicide with someone in distress, please forward your name and contact details to [email protected] to receive a GLASS EMPTY & The Whisperer Team certificate.

Step 7
If you're the first one in your area to become a Community Whisperer and you want to recruit other people in your region to form a Whisperer Team and assist someone, when they're in distress (and help local venues to be conversation ready too), download the flier below, print it for placement on local noticeboards or publish it on social media, with a link to www.glassempty.org/contact.

We are compiling a list of Whisperer Teams across the country and beyond, and the details of those in your area, who reach out to us, will be passed on to you for you to build your area's own Whisperer Team.

Use the B.R.A.V.E. acronym and sharing protocols in the documents below. These documents can also be used for group sharing within a Whisperer Team.
