Suicide Facts

Here's what you need to know.

*Around the world someone dies from suicide every 40 seconds.

*In Australia suicide is the leading cause of death for people aged 15 to 44 and the second highest for the 45 to 65 age group.

*The stats tell us that in Australia suicide distress could happen to anyone. In fact according to recent figures released by Suicide Prevention Australia, in the years between 2020 to 2022, 1 in 6 Australians aged 16 to 85 years experienced suicidal thoughts or behaviours in their life.

*An estimated 65,000 Australians make a suicide attempt every year.

*The stats also show that with the 9 people a day (on average, 7 men and 2 women) who suicide in Australia, those aged 15 to 44 are most at risk as it’s the most common form of death.

*There is a huge drinking culture within that age bracket and on average around 27% of Australians who suicide have alcohol in their system (2021 published study by Tristan Hurzeler, Nicholas A. Buckley, Firouzeh Noghrehchi, Peter Malouf, Andrew Page, Jennifer L. Schumann, Kate Chitty. Click here for more info.)

*37% of Australian men who experience suicidal thoughts do not reach out for help.

*In 2022, the suicide rate among Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people was approximately twice that of non-indigenous Australians.

*According to the National Suicide Prevention Strategy 2025 to 2035, beyond the human impacts, the economic cost of suicide attempts is estimated to be $30.5B a year.

So we as a nation need to start the conversation around how we start the conversation. This is where pubs, often the hubs of community, along with clubs, bars, cafes and breweries, can be part of the solution and where the GLASS EMPTY Signal and a confidential conversation can help get people suffering in silence to safety.
